Definition (formal)

Length refers to the number of words that the author is expected to use to achieve the purpose of the writing.

Definition (informal)

Length: How long is it?

Example

For example, the required length of the Persuasive Essay Example is 500-600 words and the actual length (not including references) is about 570 words.

Length: 600 words (not including references and direct quotations)
