Primary vs secondary sources

Primary Sources: Those written by an eye witness to the event. Includes photographs and other images made by someone who were present at the event.

Secondary Sources: Commentary, scholarly research by people after the event and referring to primary sources; can be many years after the event.

Most first year subjects will require the use of recent research rather primary sources.
