One Search

One Search is a good place to start searching for books, ebooksjournal articles, and our e-journal content all at once - about 100 million items at your fingertips courtesy of the JCU Library's print and electronic collections.

One Search provides a Google-like search experience, allowing researchers to use one search box to discover credible and reliable library content available online and in print from the Townsville, Cairns and Singapore campus libraries.

The Facts About Borrowing

Getting Started - Books & eBooks

You can search for books and eBooks using OneSearch (or the library's catalogue, if you want to go "old school").  OneSearch will also search through some of our databases and other resources, so if you want to focus on books in our collection you will need to use the options down the side to narrow your content type to "Book/eBook" or "Book Chapter"

One Search links to our catalogue for books, which :

  • lists all print, electronic and audio-visual resources held
  • shows where a resource is located, its call number, and if it is available for loan
  • allows you to place holds on borrowable items.

You should:

  • Use the advance search settings of One Search to give you more control.
  • Follow Subject headings of useful titles to find related books.
  • Remember books can be borrowed by other people, you need to get in early
  • Note the call number (shelf location) to find books on the shelfs. The number in the catalogue will tell you in what part of the library to look for the book - and remember the letters are part of the call number (e.g.: 600.0711 ESS 2011)
  • When you get to the section of the library with that number, browse the shelves - there may be more books on the same subject in the same area.

To get the best results, you need to put some thought into your search strategy. One Search does work a bit like Google, but with all search tools, the better your search design is, the better your results will be.

This search box will take you away from this page, so read all of the instructions first.

  1. First, run a search for pain management - just those two words, together,  with no punctuation.  Check the number of results.
  2. Next, use phrase searching and put the words in quotation marks:  "pain management"
  3. Then try "pain management" pharmacy.
  4. Finally, try "pain management" pharm*
