PhAST Track Anatomy and Physiology Module: 1. Cells, Tissues, and Communication

Teaching Staff

The lecturer for this module is Dr Nagaraha Haleagrahara (Naga for short). Naga’s office is in the Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences building (Building 87), Room 218. Naga can be contacted by email: haleagrahara.nagaraha@jcu.edu.au or by phone: 07 4781 6370.

Learning Objectives

The attached document is a list of the learning objectives for this module. Print and read through this list to see what you are aiming to have achieved when you reach the end of the module. You can also check off the objectives as you go.

About This Module

This module begins with an introduction to physiological principles such as homeostasis, feedback control and the organisation of the human body. Starting with the smallest of these levels of organisation begins with discussions of the cell membrane, organelles and their structures and functions. Different tissue types are examined. The development of membrane potentials and their use as signals leads into a discussion of communication in excitable tissues by action potentials and chemical communication in other tissues.

Mastering Anatomy and Physiology

Assignment 1 (Cells) in MasteringA&P contains some simple review activities associated with the module. This assignment will also help you to get used to using MasteringA&P.   If you have access, log in to MasteringA&P and complete this assignment.

Alternativerly, log in to MyA&P, select "Chapter 3" and hit "go".  Select the activities you would like to work on - my favourites are the animations (A&P Flix) and the crossword puzzles.

Chapter 11 will provide you with activities regarding the membrane potential, synapse and neurotransmitters.  The A&P Flix animations "The Resting Membrane Potential", "Generation of an Action Potential" and "Propagation of an Action Potential" are very good at helping you to visualise what is happening at the membrane during these events.

Interactive Physiology

The “Nervous System 1: Ion Channels”, “Nervous System 1: The Membrane Potential” and “Nervous System 1: The Action Potential” sections of Interactive Physiology are good tutorials which may help you to understand these concepts.
