PhAST Track Anatomy and Physiology Module: 2. The Nervous System Anatomy and Physiology

Teaching Staff

The lecturer for this module is Dr Nicole Reinke. Nicole’s office is in the Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences building (Building 87), Room 219. Nicole can be contacted by email: nicole.reinke@jcu.edu.au.

Learning Objectives

The attached document is a list of the learning objectives for this module. Print and read through this list to see what you are aiming to have achieved when you reach the end of the module. You can also check off the objectives as you go.

About This Module

This module starts by examining the types of nervous tissue and how nerve cells communicate with each other, and with other tissues. This is followed by examination of the different components of the nervous system, starting with the central nervous system, progressing through the peripheral nervous system and its functional divisions. A discussion of higher brain function will focus on memory and learning - this may be helpful in helping you to work out more efficient ways to study. This module also includes lectures on the special senses, including the anatomy and physiology of vision, hearing, equilibrium and balance, taste and smell.

LearnJCU

For each lecture of this module there are short answer and multiple choice questions in LearnJCU. Make sure you complete these learning activities – usually a few of these questions will appear on the end of semester exam!

Mastering Anatomy and Physiology

Assignments 2 (Conduction and Neurotransmission) and 3 (Nervous System) in MasteringA&P review some of the important learning objectives of this module. Log in to MasteringA&P and complete these assignments.

The Chatper 11 activities in MyA&P "Video Tutor: Propagation of an Action Potential" and "Memory Game: Action Potential Propagation" will help you understand these difficult concepts.  The activitiew about The Synapse are also important to engage with. The majority of the Chapter Review Questions will be useful for you to text your knowledge of this material.

Interactive Physiology

The “Nervous System 1: Anatomy Review” section of Interactive Physiology is a good tutorial on the basic anatomy of neurons as well as the propagation of action potentials and the action of myelin.
