Strategic Publishing

This guide provides information about strategic publishing, publishing agreements and Open Access

What Is Strategic Publishing?

It is important to plan where you intend to publish your findings, so they can be discovered, cited, respected, and recognised. This in turn will significantly contribute to your research profile, increase the impact of your work, expand the knowledge within your discipline and contribute to your institution's reputation.

Strategic publishing is using a systematic approach to maximise the exposure and impact of your work by making informed decisions about publishing as well as promoting and tracking your published research.

Developing a publishing strategy includes the following steps:

  1. Decide where to publish: apply due diligence in creating an aspirational list of quality journals/publishers to submit your manuscript to (see Journals section in this guide)
  2. Make your work freely accessible to the world: see our Read and Publish Agreements as well as other pathways to open access
  1. Promote your published work: Having a post-publication strategy for promoting your work is important because it increases the chances of public engagement with your research. (see Researcher Profiles, Identifiers and Engagement guide)
  1. Track the reception of your research outputs: Monitor citations data and alternative metrics and benchmark performance against your peers (see Research Assessment and Impact guide)
