A curation of materials relating to Open Educational Resources and their use

What is Open Pedagogy?

Open Pedagogy is an educational approach that emphasizes collaboration, accessibility, and the active participation of students in the learning process. It integrates principles from open education, such as the use of Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Educational Practices (OEP), and focuses on reducing barriers to access and participation. For more information, see The University of British Columbia's excellent summary.

What are some of the benefits of Open Pedagogy?

Open pedagogy can offer the following potential benefits:

  1. Student Agency: Open pedagogy empowers students by giving them an active role in their learning process. They can contribute to the creation of course content, which fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility

  2. Engagement and Critical Thinking: By involving students in the creation and curation of knowledge, open pedagogy encourages deeper engagement and critical thinking. Students are not just passive consumers of information but active participants in their education

  3. Collaboration and Digital Literacy: Open pedagogy often involves the use of digital tools and platforms, promoting collaboration among students. This helps them develop essential digital literacy skills that are valuable in today's technology-driven world

  4. Inclusivity and Flexibility: Open pedagogy creates an inclusive learning environment by valuing diverse perspectives and experiences. It also offers flexibility in how students can demonstrate their understanding, catering to different learning styles

  5. Empowerment and Growth: The approach centers care, empathy, and flexibility, which can lead to personal empowerment and growth for students. It encourages them to take risks and explore new ways of learning
