AMA 11th Referencing Guide

Referencing guide for the 11th Edition of AMA Style

Data or files from the ABS or AIHW

Use this formatting if:

  • The information is a document or file and not a "standard" website. Otherwise, site as a website.
  • NOTE:  If a PDF has an ISBN, then the work is technically an eBook, not a report.

You will need (minimum information in bold):

  • Author(s) (if given)
  • Title of document (Title Case, not in italics)
  • Issuing body (i.e., the government department - include the name of the country if it is not obvious in the name, e.g. Office for National Statistics, United Kingdom)
  • Published year
  • Publication number (if any)
  • Accessed date
  • URL

Standard Government or Agency Reports pattern:

Author AA, Author BB. Title of Document. Name of Issuing Body; Year of publication. Updated Month DD, YYYY. Accessed Month DD, YYYY. URL

Examples:

  1. Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. OECD Health Care Quality and Outcomes Indicators, Australia 2021: Acute Care Indicator Definitions. Australian Institute of Health and Welfare; 2022. Accessed August 31, 2022. https://www.aihw.gov.au/getmedia/599aa3f0-3919-41d5-b856-e345feaf94fc/AIHW-PHE-301-Acute-care-definitions.docx.aspx
  2. Australian Bureau of Statistics. Dietary Behaviour: TABLE 1: Summary Health Characteristics by Age and Sex. Australian Bureau of Statistics; 2022. Catalogue number 4364.0.00.013. Accessed August 31, 2022. https://www.abs.gov.au/statistics/health/health-conditions-and-risks/dietary-behaviour/2020-21#data-downloads

Note:

ABS documents have moved away from using catalogue numbers, but if you are citing a document that had been released with a catalogue number, you should include it.

Reports in the AMA 11th Manual

Government, agency and organisational reports are generally treated in a similar fashion to ebooks or electronic journal articles, depending on which pattern seems most appropriate for the publication method of the report. Reports that are articles in a series or collection, and have issue or article numbers, should be treated like journal articles. Reports that have ISBNs or stand alone should be treated like ebooks.

The AMA manual does not use italics on the titles of the reports it has as examples.

Refer to this section of the AMA manual for more advice and examples:

We acknowledge the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the first inhabitants of the nation and acknowledge Traditional Owners of the lands where our staff and students, live, learn and work.Acknowledgement of Country
