Switching from EPUB to PDF

Starting May 1, 2025, ProQuest Ebook Central shifted the default online reading format from PDF to EPUB (Electronic Publication) to improve accessibility and compatibility with assistive technologies. This "EPUB Preferred" initiative aims to make ebooks easier to read on a broader range of devices and provide users with a more accessible reading experience that adapts to screen readers, without needing to turn on Text-Only mode.

A toggle feature is available in the Ebook Central Online Reader, allowing users to switch between EPUB and PDF formats when both are available. This ensures flexibility and user preference in reading format selection. If there is no 'switch to PDF/EPUB' button displayed within the book details icon, it means there is no alternate file format to display.

Switch from EPUB to PDF

An icon shaped like a book in the blue menu bar at the top of the Ebook Central screen allows you to toggle between EPUB and PDF formats. It is located next to the hamburger menu.

Switch from PDF to EPUB

In the PDF reader view, find the book icon in the blue bar down the side of the screen to see the book details. Here, you will see the option to switch back to the EPUB version, under the cover art and publication details of the book.

Where are the page numbers?

In EPUB format, page numbers may not exist or be consistent across devices due to the responsive nature of the format. For referencing and citing page numbers, we recommend switching to the PDF format to access correct page numbers.
