Posters and Presentations: Presenting your poster

Presenting at conference

Presenting a poster at a conference is one way of communicating your research to your peers. It is an opportunity to meet with your colleagues, discuss new ideas, and promote your research in an effective visual way.

Some top tips for presenting at conference:

  • Have your contact details ready to pass onto interested colleagues - they may become your collaborators! Keep business cards handy, or why not learn how to generate a QR code which links to your details online and ask people to scan their phones?
  • What is your elevator pitch? If someone asked you to explain your research in 30 seconds, could you do it?
  • Pay attention to conference requirements, are they expecting you to present alongside your poster? If so, for how long? Will your poster be displayed in a hall during lunch? Will it be available online for people to download?
  • If you are giving a presentation, do your best not to read directly from your poster word-for-word - think of a way of engaging directly with your audience, tell a story!
