To adhere to JCU Academic Integrity guidelines you are required to acknowledge the use of any AI tool that was used to help with your assessment as you would when acknowledging any source. Each referencing style will have their own rules regarding how to cite and reference AI, however, it is important to continually check the JCU Referencing Guides or for the latest recommendations around referencing AI. As AI is a new area it may be updated as new information comes to light.
Refer to the following for referencing advice:
Most major referencing styles do not reference the GenAI program directly, as it is not a person and therefore cannot be an author. Generally speaking, the advice is to make it clear what content was generated by a program, and then give a reference for the software that was used.
However, this is not consistent across all referencing styles and you should check the rules for the style you are using.
Legally speaking, an AI program cannot be an author as only humans (or companies) can be authors, but if you are dealing with a work that has listed ChatGPT, Claude or some other program as a "co-author", follow the recommended citation of the article as this will be necessary for others to find that work in the future.
If you are citing a work that has listed Generative AI as a creator or co-author, you should check with your lecturer if this source is appropriate or acceptable for your assignment.
