HDR Open Access Advocate 2020

To mark Open Access Week 2020, JCU Library and Information Services and the Graduate Research School, are pleased to announce the inaugural  “HDR Open Access Advocate” competition.

The competition is open to all JCU Higher Degree by Research candidates, with a prize awarded for the best short communication that answers the question, “Why I support Open Access in research”. All entries should be submitted here.

Creativity is encouraged in responses, and entries in any form (from tweet to haiku to multimedia video) will be accepted – so long as they are short and sweet! All submissions should be on the theme of the value of Open Access in research, and its benefit to scholarship and society. Judging criteria will be as follows:

  • Did the communication provide a clear, simple explanation of the entrant’s reasons for supporting open access research?
  • Was the communication comprehensible to a wide range of audiences across multiple disciplines and interests?
  • Did the entrant make entertaining and engaging points without trivialising the issue?
  • Did the entrant convey enthusiasm for their advocacy of open access research?
  • Did the communication capture and maintain the interest of the judges?
  • Did the communication convince the judges that open access research was of value to scholarship and society?

 All PhD candidates who submit an entry will be entitled to claim 1 point in the Leadership and Initiative category of RD7003 Professional Development.

The Prize:- The winner will receive a $200 book voucher, jointly sponsored by the JCU Library and Information Services, and the GRS. The winning entry will be announced in mid-November.

ECR Open Access Champion 2020

The ECR Open Access Champion 2020 Award will be presented to the researcher with the most open access publications over a two year period, and with demonstrated impact.

The Selection Panel will comprise: Professor Sean Ulm (CASE), Professor Maxine Whittaker (CPHMVS), Tove Lemberget (LIS) and Jayshree Mamtora (LIS).

The winner of the award will be announced in mid-November.
