PhAST Track Mathematics Module: Revision: Fractions

Do you fight mean, or fight hard?

What is a tenth of a second?

"It is one-eighth of a heartbeat, 1/30th of a sigh, 1/21,000,000,000th of a lifetime"

(from "Track & Field: Fight for a fraction". Time Magazine, March 13, 1964)

Fractions

Fractions. You know them best as the marks given to you on pieces of assessment: e.g., 25/40. 37/80.

You’re probably able to convert these to a percentage, or at least to calculate whether you passed or not! BUT…it’s important that you can add, subtract, multiply, divide, and manipulate these functions quickly and confidently.

The most difficult year-12 level fraction questions are reviewed in the following test. See how you go without the use of a calculator:

How did you go?

All good? Still fighting to understand key fractions concepts?

There are revision activities available on the BBC website:

One more trick

Can you turn a fraction into a decimal? Can you turn a decimal into a fraction? Where do percentages come into all this? Let’s revise.
