PhAST Track Mathematics Module: Concentration: Amount per Amount

Different ways of stating the same thing

Different medications may have their strengths expressed differently. For example, oral mixtures can be expressed as weight/unit volume (as above), weigh / unit dose, or even total content in the package!

Amount per amount

There are THREE different ways to express concentration as "amount per amount":

  1. Amount (weight) per unit (volume)
  2. Amount (volume) per unit (volume)
  3. Amount (weight) per unit (weight)

In regards to liquid formulations in pharmacy, the most common way to express concentration is using option #1 (because generally medicines are available in solid form, they are weighed and added to a liquid base).
