Queensland Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Family History Guide

About Queensland State Archives

As a result of past Government practices in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, Queensland State Archives holds extensive archival records that include information about individuals, family and community links, historical material, native title determination and other legal matters.

You can view records on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in ArchivesSearch. ArchivesSearch is Queensland State Archives online catalogue and provides access to records including documents, letters, land orders, maps, plans and images.

You can search ArchivesSearch with or without an account. However, creating an account allows you to save searches, request digital copies of items and order items to be viewed at the QSA reading room. Click here to create an account.

Community and Personal Histories Team

The Queensland State Archives has a dedicated Community and Personal Histories Team that offers a free service for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The service aims to help you find out who your family is, where your family comes from, and how you might be connected to a certain place.

The team will research your family on your behalf, utilizing government archives that contain records that may not be accessible to the public or visible online. The length of this process is on a case by case basis, and can last from months to years. For more information, contact the team by phone 1800 650 230 or by email: enquiries@dsdsatsip@qld.gov.au.
