Queensland Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Family History Guide

Centre for Indigenous Family History Studies

The Centre for Indigenous Family History Studies (CIFHS) website was created to provide a resource for Indigenous people to research their family history. The material has been sourced from publicly available records in various state and federal archives including information about births, deaths, and marriages, removal records, exemption records, employment, Protector and Chief Protector of Aborigines correspondences, settlement and mission records, and more.

CIFHS regularly updates it's collection as more records become publicly available. So if you are unable to find your ancestor/relative, be sure to check the website regularly.

While the information in these records is generally restricted to a name, it is still useful as it links your ancestor or family member to a particular place, time or event. You can use this information as a starting point in your research or incorporate findings when searching other collections and databases.

CIFHS is a great resource for researchers and is relatively easy to navigate. You can search through the collection by state and type of record or you can search for your ancestor/family members name in it's search bar.
