ResearchOnline@JCU: ERA

This Guide will help researchers and depositors get started with ResearchOnline@JCU, the institutional repository of James Cook University. ResearchOnline@JCU is the collection of research outputs by JCU staff and higher degree research students.

Why your research output is important to the University

The University reports the publications by JCU researchers to the Australian Government. These reports contribute to the benchmarking of the performance of  Australian universities.

Publications are reported via the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) initiative which assesses research quality within Australia's higher education institutions using a combination of indicators and expert review.

Author affiliation statement for JCU authors

The affiliation of JCU authors should be listed on publications as:

  • James Cook University (not JCU or James Cook Uni)
  • Name of College / Research Centre
  • Campus address

Providing your affiliation in this format ensures that all JCU publications are correctly and consistently attributed. This is particularly important for benchmarking research performance and government reporting.

If clarification is required for particular research groups, contact the Repository and Metadata Services Team.

Depositing publications in ResearchOnline@JCU

Publications should be deposited in ResearchOnline@JCU once you have been notified that they have been accepted for publication.

When you deposit your publications in ResearchOnline@JCU, you need to select Field of Research (FoR) and Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) codes. Choose the codes that represent the research covered in your publication. You can choose up to three codes for each publication. You also need to allocate a percentage for each code, totalling 100% for the publication. For more information, see About Research Classification using Codes.

In addition to making sure a publication is counted for ERA, loading your publications to ResearchOnline@JCU offers the following benefits:

  • Citation advantage through wide and rapid dissemination of your work
  • Access to restricted publications via the Request-a-Copy button
  • A permanent link to your research or your College's research outputs
  • Preservation as a permanent collection and record of research outputs.

See the Publication Types page in this LibGuide for more detailed information about the Australian Government ERA specifications for:

  1. Journal articles
  2. Books and book chapters
