Pharmacy is a branch of medical science concerned with the source, nature, properties, preparation and use of medicinal drugs.

Pharmacists don't just fill prescriptions.  They are instrumental in promoting health awareness, and play an important role in improving public health within the community.

The roles and responsibilities of a pharmacist may include:

  • Preparing or supervising the dispensing of medications.
  • Counseling patients on how they should best take or use their medicines to ensure a safe and effective treatment outcome.
  • Providing information and guidance to members of the public and other health professionals on approapriate selection of prescription or over-the-counter medications, the relevant dosage and administration instructions, drug interactions and potential adverse effects.
  • Developing legally recognised standards, protocols or guidelines that outline good practice and mandate appropriate conduct.
  • Advising on government controls and regulations regarding the manufacture and supply of medicines.
  • Researching and developing new medicines.
  • Managing pharmaceutical companies.

Pharmacists are often the first point of contact between the public and the health care system, and is increasingly called upon to give advice in matters of health and hygiene.
