PhAST Track Orientation Module: Subjects in semester one

When do classes start

Lectures all begin in WEEK 1.

Make sure you attend the introductory (i.e. first) lecture, as this session will outline the start-date for tutorials and practicals. If in doubt, consult each subject’s outline (available on the relevant subject’s learnJCU site).

Printable, modifiable timetable

Key: (L) = Lecture

A printable, modifiable version is available here.

N.B. This timetable only lists the lectures for CH1001, PC1001, PC1004 and BM1000
The subject co-ordinators for these subjects will discuss the other components at the first introductory lecture.

(A complete timetable is available here,
however it lists all the repeat practicals and tutorials
into only one of each you will be allocated).

Tutorials and Practicals

Important: Workplace Health and Safety

For each lab that you will be working in, you will be required to complete a safety induction.

There are certain requirements that must be met for you to be able to work in these spaces.

CLOSED-IN SHOES, SAFETY EYEWEAR AND A LAB COAT ARE NOT NEGOTIABLE.

Entry will not be permitted if you do not have this basic equipment.  This means you will not complete the practical or class, and miss out any associated marks assigned to its completion.

BM1000: Introductory Biochemistry and Microbiology

The subject coordinator for BM1000 is Professor Jim Burnell (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology).

There will be three lectures each week. In addition, there are tutorial sessions and practical sessions.

"Take blank paper and a couple of different coloured pens to class as Jim Burnell will not use his lecture notes, but will draw flow diagrams for you to copy down at lightning speed!  If Jim tells a story, take notes because these stories often form the basis of exam questions.  The pracs are a good time to ask questions and ALWAYS do the pre-reading! If you are struggling with anything, try to get on top of it as soon as possible because the material does tend to pile up in this subject."

-        Allison Jackson

"Make sure you take some blank paper as there are many theories which require more than the small box which contains the slide. Some lecturers write a lot of information on the board, and this is very handy to grasp the concept they are discussing."

CH1001 Chemistry: A Central Science

The subject coordination of CH1001 is shared by Professor Richard Keene and Associate Professor Michael Oelgemoeller (Chemistry).

There will be three lectures each week. In addition, there are tutorial sessions and practical sessions.

"Studying chemistry is crucial to your further years of study. The stronger your foundation in chemistry the easier the next years will be. I would suggest finding a few books on the material as they all explain the same thing in different ways and you might find an explanation that works for you."

- Alykhan Halari

PC1001 Human Anatomy and Physiology 1

The subject coordinator for PC1001 is Ms Nicole Reinke (School of Veterinary & Biomedical Sciences).

There will be three lectures each week. In addition, you are required to attend practical sessions.  You will be assigned to one of two groups and you MUST attend the practical session you have been allocated.

"Anatomy and Physiology was my favourite subject in first year.  The textbook is excellent for the pracs and have great diagrams to explain how something works.  Often in this subject, diagrams make more sense than words so if you can draw the diagram and then explain it in simple terms you should have a good grasp on the topic.  The practicals were really good as it was more hands on than some of the other subjects.  This is a subject where you might have to look up a few different resources before you get an explanation that makes sense to you as to how the body works.  There are a lot of different ways to explain the same thing so ask your friends if they can explain it to you or if you have an explanation that you think makes more sense than the lecture notes, share it with others so that they can better understand it too."

-        Allison Jackson

"This subject will appear quite hard for most as nothing similar has been studied during school. I found it to be more time consuming than other subjects for this reason, however I also found it to be the most interesting. Marieb is an excellent text book for this subject."

PC1004 Introduction to Pharmacy Practice and Pharmaceutical Sciences 1

The subject coordinator for PC1004 is Ms Tori Llewelyn.

There will be three lectures each week. In addition, there is a tutorial session in most weeks and also a practical session. You will be assigned to one of two groups and must attend the following designated tutorials and practical sessions.

Please note that on three occasions during the semester the Friday tutorials will be merged into a whole-class, two-hour tutorial. On these days, all students, regardless of  which group they normally attend, are required to attend a tutorial in 047-002 from 8am-10am. The dates for these sessions are listed in the subject outline.
