PhAST Track Orientation Module: Advisors & Co-ordinators

Advisors and co-ordinators are here to help

Subject Co-ordinators

Each staff member is the subject coordinator for several subjects. The subject coordinator is your first port of call for any concerns that relate specifically to a subject, such as an illness which will affect your ability to complete a requirement of the subject, or difficulties with the subject material.

The name of the subject coordinator for each subject is given in the subject outline for that subject. Subject outlines can be found on LearnJCU.

Honours Co-ordinator

The Pharmacy Honours Coordinator is Professor Beverley Glass.

The Honours Coordinator is responsible for the overall administration of the Honours program, and for providing guidance to prospective and current Honours students regarding procedures to be followed, deadlines to be met and so on.

Provided your grade point average (GPA) is high enough, you will be invited to consider enrolling for Honours towards the end of your second year.

The academic advisor deals with any concerns you may have with respect to your enrolment and continuation in the pharmacy program. They are able to discuss issues such as:

  • Developing an adjusted course schedule if you fail a subject which is a pre-requisite for other subjects
  • Helping you work out which subjects to enrol in for the following year
  • Applying for credit for previously completed subjects at both JCU or another tertiary institution
  • Applying for course transfers
  • Applying for leave of absence from the course
  • Adding extra subjects to your enrolment or withdrawing from a subject you are currently enrolled in
  • Other issues such adjusting your enrolment because of pregnancy, illness or other circumstances

If you have any questions in relation to your enrolment, you should contact the academic advisor and ask for an appointment. If you decide, for any reason, to withdraw from the course, please discuss with and/or notify the course Academic Advisor. It is important to follow appropriate processes for withdrawal so that you don’t adversely affect your academic standing within the university and your ability to continue with further studies.

"I was fortunate that I didn’t have to see the academic adviser about anything.  It was good to know though that someone was there if something happened that would affect my study and I could speak to them about it. I’ve heard from people who did contact the Academic Advisers and from all accounts, they try to do all they can to help with any queries or concerns you have."

Your year coordinator is your first port-of-call for any general concerns you may have about the course, or any concerns you may have in respect to completing course requirements.

In particular, if you have an issue such as an illness which is affecting your ability to study, or a family-related issue which may require absence for a period of time, or a personal issue which means that you find it difficult to study, you should talk to your year coordinator sooner rather than later. Remember that at university, you are responsible for taking action to ensure that you can meet all the requirements of the course.

If you have been unable to attend a class or clinic which you are required to attend, or if you need additional time to complete an assignment, you must formally apply for an extension of time or a substitute activity etc.
