Harvard Referencing (AGSM)

Guide to the Harvard Referencing Style, as used by Australian Government bodies

Films

Format Director D (director) or Producer P (producer) (Year) Title of film: subtitle of film [motion picture], Name of Studio or Publisher, Place of Production.
Example

Luhrmann B (director) (1996) Romeo + Juliet [motion picture], Bazmark Productions, Australia.

Moore M (director) (2002) Bowling for Columbine [motion picture], United Artists; Alliance Atlantis; Salter Street Films; Dog Eat Dog Films, United State of America.

Notes for films:

  • When citing films with longer titles in text you can abbreviate the title after the first mention as long as it makes sense. You can also omit the date in parentheses. This often happens with well-known and longer titles because it improves the flow of the text.
  • Do not include information about the platform or distributor i.e. how you accessed the episode as this information is irrelevant.
  • You may provide a URL for a film or TV episode, but only if the episode is freely available via a website (e.g. ABC TV, SBS On Demand).

For EndNote users:

EndNote Reference Type Film or Broadcast
Field notes
  • Enter the format i.e. motion picture in the Medium field.
  • Enter the name of Studio or Publisher in the Distributor field.

Television

Format Director D (director) or Producer P (producer) (Year) ‘Title of episode: subtitle of episode’ [television program], Name of series (season number, episode number), Name of Station or Studio, Place of Production.
Example

Letterman D, Rosegarten R, Smiley S, Rosenthal P, Romano R and Schneider L (executive producers) (1999) 'The will' [television program], Everybody loves Raymond (season 4, episode 5), Warner Bros. Studios, United States of America.

Williams M (director) (2013) 'Origin' [television program], David Attenborough's Galapagos (season 1, episode 1), Colossus Productions, London.

Fitzgerald, M (director) (2009) The Gruen transfer (season 2, episode 6) [television program], CJZ, Sydney.

Notes for TV programs:

  • If there is no episode name use the title of the television program followed by the season and episode information.
  • Do not include information about the platform or distributor i.e. how you accessed the episode, as this information is irrelevant.
  • You may provide a URL for a film or TV episode, but only if the episode is freely available via a website (e.g. ABC TV, SBS On Demand).

For EndNote users:

EndNote Reference Type Television episode
Field notes
  • Enter the director in the Producer field.
    • If there is no director, enter the producer's name in the Series Director field.
    • You only need either directors or producers. Do not fill in both fields.
  • Enter the name of the studio or production company into the Distributor field.
  • enter the word television in the Medium field.
  • If there is no episode title, the placement of the medium field will be incorrect in the reference and will need to be edited manually:
    • before submission convert the document to plain text
    • edit the converted to plain text version of your document to move the placement of [television program] to after the series and episode information in the reference (see example 3 above).
