Creating a staff assigned block

Creating and adding a staff assigned block

Purpose: 

  • Guide to setting up library assigned blocks to patrons. Blocks prevent the loaning, renewing and submitting of hold requests for specific patrons or under certain conditions. Useful if patron reports a lost card.

ALMA Roles needed:

  • General System Administrator
  • Fulfillment Administrator

Responsibility

  • Team Leader/Supervisor

To create a new block definition

  • Open ALMA
  • Go to Configuration Menu > Fulfillment > Patron Configurations > User Block Description
  • Check block does not already exist
  • Click Add Row and complete required fields
  • Code = meaningful short abbreviation eg. altfee
  • Description = Block reason eg. fees on alternate account (this message will show when staff try to loan out a book at the desk)
  • Click Add Row
  • Save

  • ​​​​​​​Go to Configuration Menu > Fulfillment > Patron Configurations > User Block Definition
  • In this table, you assign a block to each reason you specified in the previous step.  
  • Click Add Row and complete required fields
  • Id = the code you added previously eg. altfee
  • In the Type field, select the type of block, usually General
  • Overridable - usually ALL 
  • Blocked Action 01 will block Loans, 02 will block Loans and renewals, 03 will block loans, renewals and holds.
  • Click Add Row
  • Save

To apply a block to a specific patron record

  • Go to Admin > User Management > Manage Users
  • Search for patron
  • In the go user Details screen go to the Blocks tab and add the required block
  • You can add an expiry date if the block is only required for a specific period
  • Click Add and Close
  • Save
  • When the patron tries to borrow at the desk Library staff will see the block message, if the patron uses the self-check unit it will block the loan and refer them to the desk.

To remove block

  • Go to Admin > User Management > Manage Users
  • Search for patron
  • In the go user Details screen go to the Blocks tab and locate block
  • In the kebab menu click Delete
