Interactive Rubric for Written Communication: 5.4. Vocabulary

This guide will help you understand common conventions of academic writing and the application of marking rubrics

Definition (formal)

Vocabulary relates to the selection and use of words that convey meaning in a particular context.

Definition (informal)

Vocabulary: Did you choose your words carefully?

For example, the Persuasive Essay Example avoids informal contractions (e.g., didn't) and colloquialisms (e.g., a bonza bloke) because its vocabulary is selected for a formal context.
