Typing in references

You will need to use the manual entry feature of Endnote for some types of resources, particularly:

  • webpages and documents,
  • results from databases that are not compatible with Endnote,
  • entering details of hard-copy items you may have in your files but you cannot find references for in a database.

Comprehensive instructions may be found by looking in the Help file of your EndNote program under Working with References >> Creating a New Reference.

Manual Data Entry

The following video has been produced by Curtin University.

Notes for adding a manual entry

Things to remember when adding a manual entry, or editing an incorrect or incomplete entry:

  • Each author should be on a separate line in the author field and should be in one of these formats:
    • Forename Surname
    • Surname, Forename
    • Corporate Name, (note the comma at the end of corporate names – this stops it from being treated like a human's name)
  • Any editors or translators should be added to their fields the same way you add authors
  • Any information added to the Title field should be in sentence case
  • Extra spaces or line breaks should be removed if copying-and-pasting from another source (e.g. a PDF)
  • The DOI field should only contain the DOI with no other additions (e.g.,10.1177/0957154x13512192 – not doi:10.1177/0957154x13512192 or https://doi.org/10.1177/0957154x13512192)
  • If your reference isn't showing the DOI or URL, you may need to change the Reference Type. E.g., change from Journal Article to Electronic Article.

1 minute 50 seconds

This brief tutorial created for EndNote 20 is still current for EndNote 21. It shows how you can manually edit a reference after you have exported it from a database or search tool.
