EndNote

Create an "independent bibliography"

EndNote is designed to insert citations while you are writing your document (Cite While You Write), but sometimes there are good reasons NOT to use it and create an "independent bibliography" at the end of a document instead:

  • The document only has a few references
  • You want to be able to edit the bibliography references like the rest of the text
  • You aren't using Word or your toolbar isn't working
  • You think Cite While You Write is too complicated
  • You just want a formatted list of your references to share with someone.

To create a separate bibliography in EndNote

  1. Select the referencing style you wish to use to format your list from the styles menu.
  2. Select the references you want to add to your reference list.
  3. Select References > Copy Formatted Reference
    • You can also find Copy Formatted Reference on the right mouse click menu or use the shortcut Control/Command key + K
  4. In Word select Edit > Paste to paste the reference list.
    • Alternatively use the right click menu and choose Paste or use the shortcut Control/Command key + V
  5. Note this will retain the formatting including fonts and font sizes from your EndNote display settings. You may need to reformat the size and font style to match the style in your document.

Exporting references from EndNote to use in other formats

References from EndNote can be exported in a number of formats, such as

  • RIS - to upload to other systems such as ResearchOnline@JCU, Readings or other referencing software such as Mendeley or Zotero.
  • tab delimited files - to use with Excel and spreadsheet programs
  • BibTex - to use with LaTex files
  • XML
  • and many more.

To export references in your EndNote library and save them in another format:

  1. Select the references which you want to export
  2. Go to File > Export...
  3. Choose the file location and name it
  4. Save as Type: .txt
  5. Choose the Output Style: e.g. RefMan (RIS) format for RIS files or Tab Delimited
If your style does not show, then choose Select Another Style at the top of the menu and then locate the file type
  6. If you have only selected some references, make sure that the Export Selected References tickbox is checked.
